Despite the recorded cases of unstable results, many people turned to transference as a way to prolong life and overcome handicaps and diseases.

But the process became highly controversial. The grid swarmed with personal commentaries, reports of political demonstrations and even conflicts over ideals.

From the chaotic debates emerged two distinctive beliefs; True Born and New Life.

Those that subscribe to the True Born philosophy believe that the human body is God’s perfect design and should not be changed. Most consider the transference process a distraction or a useless luxury service that separates a man from his wallet as well as his body. However, some are convinced that the transference generator is a tool of the devil and will ultimately destroy life.

The True Born philosophy is the more militant of the two. They have staged marches and demonstrations at all the larger Profiles. Several radical wings of True Borns believe it is their purpose to protect life by destroying the generators and all metalface. The True Born groups have been accused of several raids and building bombings. They have been linked to the mysterious disappearance of at least four Metalface but as yet no solid proof has been discovered.

The New Lifers (those who subscribe to the New Life philosophy) believe that God granted humans the gift of intelligence and understanding and that transference is a natural result of applying such understanding. Some believe that life as a metalface could eventually lead to greater wisdom as the soul learns from life over the course of centuries as opposed to decades.

The New Lifers are the more broad-minded of the two beliefs. Although they do have a minority group who believe that genetic manipulation will corrupt the soul, most believe that the only way to enhanced wisdom is the transference to Metalface. They occupy positions in most of the Profiles that participate in Metalface transfer. A New Lifers idea of a political demonstration is to send a politely worded letter to an Earth Council ambassador.
